This role supports a portfolio of 8-10 Covenant churches performing core bookkeeping duties: recording and reconciling donations/giving, recording and making payments on invoices and other expenditures, recording other church transactions, reconciling accounts to bank statements or other supporting documents, and preparing and sending monthly financial reports. The role uses Quickbooks Online software, so experience with the Quickbooks platform is preferred.

Job Description

The Church Bookkeeper/Accountant manages the financial records, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with accounting principles and church policies. The role requires strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and some basic knowledge of fund-based accounting, which is unique to non-profits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Record Keeping: Record day-to-day financial transactions, including income (contributions, tithes, pledges) and expenses.
  • Accounts Payable and Receivable: Manage bills, invoices, and vendor payments (accounts payable) and track any incoming receivables.
  • Bank and Account Reconciliation: Balance and reconcile all bank accounts and investment accounts monthly to ensure accuracy.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare regular (monthly, annual) financial statements and reports, such as balance sheets and income statements, for church leadership, committees, and the congregation.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: A degree in business, accounting or finance is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience: Practical experience in church bookkeeping/accounting, or within a non-profit or ministry setting, is highly valued.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) is essential.

  • Integrity and discretion when handling sensitive data.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all financial and personal records of the church, staff, and members.
